Visit Salar de Atacama
South of San Pedro, against the fantastic backdrop of snow-capped volcanic peaks, lies the Salar de Atacama, a salt lake covering around 3000 square kilometers. This seemingly hostile environment is an intact retreat for flamingos. You watch the beautiful birds foraging and then drive to nearby Toconao.
Visit Toconao
The small village with only around 546 inhabitants has a beautiful colonial church from the 18th century with a free-standing bell tower. The white volcanic stone used here, Liparita, is characteristic of Toconao. People use it to build their houses and to make beautiful little figurines, which are sold in the main square.
