Leave Bogotá and drive 42km (26mi.) north to Zipaquirá. The City of Salt was built in the 18th century and boasts a historical centre surrounded by quaint cafes and restaurants. Then, journey about 180m (590ft.) underground to uncover the famous salt cathedral. The architectural jewel was built by miners and has become a beautiful temple. Aside from the main cathedral, see other small chapels and the Station of the Cross: 14 stations that interconnect by tunnels. As you wander around the chilly and colourfully lit cathedral, appreciate art like a small Madonna statue that was designed by Daniel Rodríguez Moreno. At the end of the tour, watch a small video and learn about the mines’ bold history before driving back to Bogotá airport for your flight to the coffee region.
