You will then travel to the underground salt cathedral of Zipaquirá, 42 km north of the Colombian capital Bogotá. The salt city was built in the 18th century and has a historic center surrounded by picturesque cafés and restaurants. You will then go around 180m underground to discover the famous Salt Cathedral. This architectural gem was built by miners and is now a beautiful temple. In addition to the main cathedral, there are other small chapels and the station of the cross to visit. Walk through the 14 stations of the Way of the Cross of Jesus Christ, which are connected by a system of tunnels. Bathed in deep blue, gray or silvery light, they commemorate Christ's suffering on the way to crucifixion.
Admire works of art such as a small statue of the Madonna designed by Daniel Rodríguez Moreno. A few meters further on, the visual highlight awaits: the huge, 16-meter-high illuminated cross made of salt shines into the three-nave, 120-meter-long cathedral.
At the end of the tour, you will see a short video and learn more about the history of the mines before driving back to Bogotá.
